Advance Query Interface

The Mirago Advanced Query Interface supports a variety of techniques allowing users to perform complex queries.

These include:

Boolean support
Mirago offers full support for Boolean searching through the use of quotation marks (“ ”) and a plus (+) or minus (-) sign within your query.

For example:

[“Bill Gates”] will return pages where ‘Bill’ and ‘Gates’ are found together as a phrase.

[Bill Gates] will still favour documents containing the two words as a phrase, but will also include pages where the words appear separately. E.g. a page containing the text “The bill for the new iron gates was £3,000”.

The plus (+) sign allows you to control the inclusion of words in your search. Using the plus sign before a word or a phrase means that the results must include that word or phrase. Conversely the (-) sign will have the opposite effect.

[Cheap +travel +insurance] Must contain the word travel and the word insurance, however the word Cheap need not necessarily appear.

[Cheap “travel insurance”] The phrase “travel insurance” must appear, however the word cheap need not necessarily appear.

Adult Filters
By default all queries performed at Mirago are filtered for adult content (e.g. those which include sex / violence) to ensure a safe search environment for all. This option can be overridden at any time.

Site Search
If you wish to target your search to a particular domain we offer a Site Search facility. By beginning your query with [Site:www.thedomain.com] you can instruct our query system to only look at the specified domain.

Similar Sites
Relevant results from our directory will automatically be included in web searches. If a result is from the directory you will see the link Similar Sites underneath the website entry (see screenshot below). Clicking on this will take you to the directory category that this result came from, allowing you to browse similar sites.

Similar sites functionality

File Type Search
Many users may be only interested in a specific document type – perhaps financial information within an Excel spreadsheet. By beginning your query with “Type:” and then specifying the file type such as PDF, DOC, HTML etc. you can instruct our query system to return only documents written in the required format.

Search Term Suggestion and word conversion
Most users are not experts in every topic that they search for. It is for this reason that we offer alternative search terms where appropriate. A search for “Alternative Medicine” will return a list of possible substitutes such as:

acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage, osteopathy, reflexology

Mirago operate on the basis that searches using slightly different language inflections should return the same results.

For example, if you are looking for pages about ‘Easter vacations’ you will also be interested in pages about ‘Easter holidays’. Mirago does discriminate between nouns and verbs so that “choreographer” will return different results to ‘choreograph’ as one would expect.

By combining these features you can build incredibly advanced queries which will execute in milliseconds. E.g.

[Type:HTML Site:www.mirago.com ‘trusted partner” +revenue share – ‘Trusted Feeds’]
